Broad Sweeping Generalizations

I keep thinking I've gotten past them, until I catch myself editing to fix one broad problem, rather than looking at a scene and editing based on the intentions I have for that scene. Don't use adverbs. Don't use purple prose. Don't forget to include actions in long stretches of dialogue. There are a lot of rules that have drifted up to the surface like muck in a spring bog. I focus on the wrong thing, end up making passes of the exposition without seeing the story. So that's my big lesson from the weekend. Last week I sacrificed my writing time to a work project so there's not much to report. But the above is a pretty big revelation for me. How long til I forget it again?   In other news, I'm excited to show off the cover I did for my friend's new cookbook! The photography is hers. Hooray for self-published!
