Branches on the Tree

drafting

I have begun the outline to book two of this series. I have also begun notes-as-outline to a separate book, with separate cast, which also takes place in the universe of my book series, which chronologically would follow book two. The first book is an adventure story. The second book would also, if it goes as planned, be an adventure story. The third book... well it was supposed to be quirky and fun. But while I was taking notes, it took a dark turn. Now it's looking like a thriller or suspense novel. That totally blows my mind. How did this happen? Where did this come from? I don't know if I've read a single thriller in my life. Oh, okay, apparently Rising Sun is a thriller. I did read that, if only because Jurassic Park meant I picked up any Michael Crichton novel I saw. I've probably read others, and didn't realize it at the time. So I guess it's time to start reading more thrillers. Because these characters are pretty adamant that that's what's going down here. I have always planned more stories in this series's universe, but expected that they'd all largely be adventure stories, on a smaller scale than the main books. When I brought in this story (which previously took place somewhere more closely resembling Earth), I thought I'd be adding another quirky adventure tale. Maybe later it could be. But first, one of the characters says she has a job to do. And if she does it, in a scary way it would shift the entire balance of the series. It would be critical information for the characters in my main story line. Guess I'd better thwart her efforts. Please don't tell her.
